The challenge

Consumer electronics face heavy counterfeiting across chargers, accessories, audio gear and components, where fakes are sold through marketplaces and grey-market channels that bypass authorised distribution. Buyers cannot distinguish a genuine unit from a convincing clone at the point of purchase, and warranty fraud, return swaps and resale of refurbished-as-new devices erode margins and brand trust. Tight enclosures, small surfaces and high production volumes make secure identity hard to add without slowing the line.

The compliance picture, without the FUD

  • Honest status: no ESPR delegated act creating a passport for electrical and electronic equipment exists today. Electronics is handled horizontally in the 2025-2030 working plan, with a repairability measure targeted around 2027 and recyclability around 2029.
  • What already applies is Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2023/1670 on smartphones and tablets, in force since 20 June 2025: 800 charge cycles at 80% capacity, spare parts for at least seven years, updates for at least five years, an A-to-E repairability class.
  • In France, the repairability index (2021) and the durability index (2024-2025) already require transparency for several equipment categories.
  • The preparation that holds regardless of the final act: a unique identity per device, structured components / conformity / repairability data, and a carrier chosen per product line. That structure is what SealTrust ships today.
